What Is Melasma?
Melasma, also called chloasma, occurs when irregular patches of dark skin arise on the face or forearms. These tan or brownish spots generally occur symmetrically around the forehead, cheeks, nose, or upper lip. The appearance of melasma distinguishes itself from other conditions that lead to darkening of the skin. Melasma is a common condition and is found more often in females. It can be caused by sun damage or by hormonal fluctuations, such as with pregnancy and menopause. Those with darker skin types are more prone to melasma than those with lighter complexions. Dr. Oben Blair Ojong is a skilled dermatologist and Mohs surgeon who treats melasma regularly at Rêve Dermatology and Aesthetics in The Woodlands, TX where we offer numerous treatments that can lessen the visibility of this cosmetic condition.
How Is Melasma Treated?
There are several possibilities for the treatment of melasma. First, various topical ointments, gels, or lotions can be given to help expedite skin lightening. Second, there are skin care procedures, such as Dermapen®, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, or fractional lasers. Another option is intense pulsed light therapy or IPL. Unlike lasers that use intense, concentrated light, IPL is focused BroadBand Light™, meaning the recovery period is brief. Results usually last when the patient implements superb sun protection and maintenance.
How Is Melasma Diagnosed?
Melasma is typically diagnosed through a visual skin examination by a dermatologist at Rêve Dermatology and Aesthetics. In some cases, a Wood’s lamp or dermatoscope may be used to assess pigmentation depth and determine the extent of discoloration. If needed, additional testing may help rule out other skin conditions. A thorough consultation, including a review of medical history and sun exposure habits, helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.
What Are the Symptoms of Melasma?
Melasma is characterized by patchy dark brown or grayish discoloration or hyperpigmentation, mainly on the face. These patches can gradually develop over time and can be triggered by hormonal changes in the body. Three kinds of common facial patterns are recognized in people with melasma:
-
Centrofacial (center of your face) hyperpigmentation around the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, nose, and chin
-
Malar (cheekbones) melasma patterns around the top of the cheeks
-
Mandibular (jawbone) hyperpigmentation parallel with the jawline

Amazing experience
If I could give Rêve Dermatology 100 stars, I would.Walking in, you’ll be greeted with a light and beautiful space. At the front desk, you’ll meet Annia, who is such a gem herself. The questionnaire is thorough, and the wait incredibly short. I’d never taken the time to get my skin treated at a dermatologist, and let me tell you—Dr. Ojong was exactly the kind of person you’d want to help you! She is kind, understanding, and goal oriented toward her patients feeling beautiful and comfortable in their own skin.Armed with my new skin care regimen, I would’ve been content at just that, but was delighted when the staff asked if I wanted to try a new line of skin care centered makeup they were showcasing—The Skincare Makeup. The lovely Janet Estrada (@cleanmakeup_janet), showed me how to use her lovingly crafted products, and to say I was amazed when I saw myself in the mirror is an understatement. Clearly crafted with passion for skin health and self-confidence, this makeup looks and feels incredible.I truly feel like I walked out of that office a new person. After feeling uncomfortable in my own skin for so long, I spent the rest of the night misty eyed, so grateful for the compassion showed by the staff at Rêve. Thank you Dr. Ojong, Rêve staff, and Janet for giving me my confidence back!!! Don’t even think about going anywhere else, it won’t even compare.
Dr. Ojong is an absolute sweetheart and really cares about what’s best for your skin and health! I feel lucky to have found such a great doctor. Her office is beautiful and doesn’t feel like a hospital. Her staff is lovely. She’s helped improve my skin by leaps and bounds! I never, ever thought I’d have decent skin, but what she’s done and recommended has GREATLY improved my complexion. We did 3 sessions of Lutronic laser and it helped soooo much! I’ve included my own before and after, both in the same lighting and bare-faced (sans eye). I’m also on a medical grade skincare routine and considering additional other treatments for anti aging, aesthetics, etc. Thank you Dr. Ojong!

What Are the Causes of Melasma?
The exact cause of melasma is still unknown, but it is believed to be influenced by various factors. These include hormonal changes, genetic predisposition, certain medications like anti-seizure drugs, and other treatments that increase the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light. Among these, excessive sun exposure is considered the leading trigger, especially for those with a genetic tendency toward the condition. Research shows that melasma often becomes more pronounced during summer months when sunlight is strongest, while it tends to fade or lighten during the winter.
Melasma FAQ
Can melasma affect individuals with darker skin tones?
Yes, melasma can affect individuals with all skin tones, but it is more common in people with medium to darker skin tones. The increased melanin production in these skin types makes them more susceptible to hyperpigmentation. However, the condition's appearance and severity can vary widely among individuals. Those with darker skin should take special care to use broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective measures to minimize the risk of worsening the condition.
Does melasma require lifelong management?
While melasma can be managed effectively, it often requires ongoing care to prevent recurrence. Sun exposure, hormonal changes, and other triggers can cause the pigmentation to return even after successful treatment. Therefore, a consistent skin care routine, including sun protection and possibly maintenance treatments, is essential to keep melasma under control. Patients should be prepared for a long-term commitment to their skin care regimen.
How does melasma differ from other forms of hyperpigmentation?
Melasma is distinct from other forms of hyperpigmentation because it is often symmetrical and has specific triggers, such as sun exposure and hormonal changes. Unlike post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which occurs after skin injury or inflammation, melasma is typically a chronic condition that can persist for years. Its response to treatment also differs, as melasma may require more targeted therapies to manage effectively.
