Rosacea in The Woodlands, TX

The skin condition known as rosacea causes the skin to appear inflamed and red, and is usually presented around the cheeks and nose. It can frequently be mistaken for other skin conditions but may be treated and managed if diagnosed correctly. Rêve Dermatology and Aesthetics in The Woodlands, TX offers numerous advanced solutions, such as laser treatment, to lighten skin and reduce the signs of this chronic disease. Rosacea can occur to almost anyone, but it's widespread among middle-aged to older women with light skin. Although this skin disease has no cure, it can be managed. If left untreated, it can worsen over time, causing symptoms to return and flare up for days or weeks. Dr. Oben Blair Ojong will assess your skin for symptoms and create a personalized treatment plan to keep them at bay.

Even though there is no cure for rosacea, many treatment options are available, including antibiotics that can help with inflammation. You can use the medicine in a capsule form or as a cream, gel, or lotion. Pills tend to be more effective in providing rapid results but can cause more side effects. If antibiotics aren't effective, acne drugs have been shown to work for some patients. Surgery may be necessary when symptoms become permanent, such as enlarged blood vessels or inflammation that won't subside with other remedies. Laser procedures or electrosurgery can be chosen to minimize the appearance of blood vessels and get rid of excess tissue buildup across the nose.

Rosacea is diagnosed through a thorough skin examination by a dermatologist at our office in The Woodlands, TX, who assesses redness, visible blood vessels, and skin texture changes. Since rosacea can resemble other skin conditions, such as acne or eczema, our team may ask about triggers, symptoms, and medical history to confirm the diagnosis. In some cases, additional tests may be conducted to rule out underlying conditions contributing to facial redness or inflammation. Early diagnosis helps manage symptoms effectively and prevent flare-ups.

Symptoms of rosacea can vary from moderate to severe. The standard sign of rosacea is redness of the face. In most patients, the central part of the face is noticeably red. The blood vessels of the cheeks and nose may swell and be visible. Other signs of rosacea include:

  • Swollen and red bumps on the face
  • Pus-filled lumps
  • Skin tenderness
  • Skin that is hot to the touch
  • Eye problems, such as dryness, irritation, and reddened, swollen eyelids
  • Enlarged nose due to skin thickening

If I could give Rêve Dermatology 100 stars, I would.Walking in, you’ll be greeted with a light and beautiful space. At the front desk, you’ll meet Annia, who is such a gem herself. The questionnaire is thorough, and the wait incredibly short. I’d never taken the time to get my skin treated at a dermatologist, and let me tell you—Dr. Ojong was exactly the kind of person you’d want to help you! She is kind, understanding, and goal oriented toward her patients feeling beautiful and comfortable in their own skin.Armed with my new skin care regimen, I would’ve been content at just that, but was delighted when the staff asked if I wanted to try a new line of skin care centered makeup they were showcasing—The Skincare Makeup. The lovely Janet Estrada (@cleanmakeup_janet), showed me how to use her lovingly crafted products, and to say I was amazed when I saw myself in the mirror is an understatement. Clearly crafted with passion for skin health and self-confidence, this makeup looks and feels incredible.I truly feel like I walked out of that office a new person. After feeling uncomfortable in my own skin for so long, I spent the rest of the night misty eyed, so grateful for the compassion showed by the staff at Rêve. Thank you Dr. Ojong, Rêve staff, and Janet for giving me my confidence back!!! Don’t even think about going anywhere else, it won’t even compare.

My favorite dermatologist! - Dr. Ojong is an absolute sweetheart and really cares about what’s best for your skin and health! I feel lucky to have found such a great doctor. Her office is beautiful and doesn’t feel like a hospital. Her staff is lovely. She’s helped improve my skin by leaps and bounds! I never, ever thought I’d have decent skin, but what she’s done and recommended has GREATLY improved my complexion. We did 3 sessions of Lutronic laser and it helped soooo much! I’m also on a medical grade skincare routine and considering additional other treatments for anti aging, aesthetics, etc. Thank you Dr. Ojong!

Though the exact cause of the condition is unknown, it is believed that a combination of hereditary and environmental elements causes it. Individuals of Celtic or Scandinavian ancestry seem to have a greater prevalence of rosacea. Patients normally have other family members who suffer from severe acne or rosacea. Individuals who are prone to bad acne have a greater risk of developing rosacea. Specialists think that an overactive immune system can lead to rosacea, especially when the immune system panics with exposure to a certain bacterium or even a mite. These theories, however, haven't been demonstrated to be completely supported.

There are a significant number of elements that could aggravate rosacea since they raise the blood flow to the top of the skin. These can include spicy foods, alcohol, hot beverages, sun, extreme temperatures, hot showers and/or baths, stress, anger or embarrassment, strenuous exercise, and certain medications.

What are some common triggers for rosacea flare-ups?

Common triggers for rosacea flare-ups include exposure to sunlight, extreme temperatures, spicy foods, alcohol, and stress. Each individual may have unique triggers, so it is essential to monitor which factors lead to flare-ups. Identifying and avoiding these triggers can help manage the condition and reduce the frequency of flare-ups.

Are there any long-term effects of untreated rosacea?

If left untreated, rosacea can lead to more severe symptoms and complications. Over time, persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and thickening of the skin can occur. In some cases, untreated rosacea can cause rhinophyma, a condition where the skin on the nose becomes thickened and bulbous. Early treatment is crucial to prevent these long-term effects.

What skin care routine is recommended for someone with rosacea?

A gentle skin care routine is recommended for those with rosacea. Using mild, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin can help prevent irritation. Sunscreen with a high SPF is essential, as sun exposure is a common trigger. It's also advisable to avoid products containing alcohol, witch hazel, or other harsh ingredients.

Rosacea causes not only physical symptoms but psychological ones as well since patients are often anxious in public and fear social interaction because of the redness. If you think you have rosacea, please contact Rêve Dermatology and Aesthetics to schedule an appointment with Dr. Ojong so that you can put your best face forward today. Our team is knowledgeable on cutting-edge remedies and can offer help and hope.
