What Is Microneedling?
When home skin care products aren't proving effective, but you don't want to undergo a surgical procedure, consider minimally invasive procedures for skin rejuvenation, such as microneedling. Dr. Oben Blair Ojong is happy to offer microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, at her office in The Woodlands, TX. Microneedling uses several fine needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. The micro-injuries prompt the natural production of elastin and collagen, two nutrients that enhance your complexion's overall health and appearance. Often performed with other skin treatments, like serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help reduce stretch marks, scars, and pores. Schedule a consultation at Rêve Dermatology and Aesthetics to discover more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize your treatment for your needs and goals.
How Does Microneedling Work?
A microneedling treatment takes around 30 – 60 minutes to complete and is performed in one of our office procedure rooms with local anesthesia or numbing cream if desired; however, patients typically report mild or no discomfort. The areas of skin being addressed will be cleaned before the handpiece is passed evenly over. Once the microneedling is performed, a topical treatment, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a serum with a vitamin infusion, can be applied for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with sunscreen since the treated skin will be more sensitive following the procedure.

Who Are Ideal Candidates for Microneedling?
You could benefit from microneedling treatments if you experience slight to moderate skin problems, like a decrease in elasticity or rough skin texture. Collagen induction therapy procedures can also improve the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and pores. You need to be willing to wait before seeing the results of your microneedling procedure since the elastin and collagen will need some time to have an impact on the complexion, but you will see natural-looking results and gain healthier, stronger skin.
Microneedling FAQ
How much does microneedling cost?
During your consultation, Dr. Ojong will perform a skin analysis and then develop your unique plan. From there, she will go over your costs and the procedure. Rêve Dermatology and Aesthetics often offers discounts on treatment packages, so be sure to ask about current deals in your consultation.
What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling is a nonsurgical treatment that tightens and rejuvenates your skin by stimulating collagen production. Collagen, a natural protein responsible for keeping your skin smooth, firm, and elastic, decreases over time, leading to thinner and less resilient skin. By creating tiny, controlled injuries in the skin, microneedling triggers the body's natural healing process, boosting collagen production and encouraging new skin cell growth. As the skin heals, it becomes healthier, firmer, and more radiant.
Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
In the process of microneedling, channels are made in your skin that help other treatments to penetrate the lower layers. That's why microneedling is frequently done with other treatments, such as special serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling plus PRP is more commonly known as the vampire facial. During your consultation, Dr. Ojong will talk about what treatments would enhance your microneedling and which best fit your skin goals.
How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Usually, patients need 3 – 6 microneedling sessions to get optimal results. However, the number of sessions you need will depend on your skin's condition and goals. Microneedling can be done every 4 – 6 weeks. During your consultation, Dr. Ojong can estimate the number of sessions you will need after assessing your skin and listening to your goals. Once your skin goals are reached, Dr. Ojong recommends getting touch-up sessions about twice a year.
Is microneedling safe for everyone?
In general, microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. Skin injuries created by microneedling are so minor there are very few side effects afterward. Microneedling can be performed on most skin areas, including the arms, face, neck, chest, and legs. Microneedling isn't recommended if you've been on Accutane within the last 2 – 3 months or if you have an open wound, active skin infection, or herpes simplex. Additionally, you may not be a candidate for microneedling if you are nursing, pregnant, or undergoing radiation therapy.
