What Is Eczema?
Eczema represents a series of skin conditions brought on by allergic reactions or the human body's response to an immune system deficiency. The result may lead to inflammation of the skin, discoloration, and itchy spots very similar to dermatitis. Often, the inflammation itself is merely dermatitis. This can occur anywhere on your body, including the hands, face, neck, or other places. Atopic dermatitis is the most prevalent type and is usually the result of an allergic reaction. This condition generally starts in childhood. How Is Eczema Treated?
Eczema can be addressed with various prescribed or over-the-counter medications and lotions. Medications, like immunomodulators or steroid creams, can help with moderate to severe eczema. An oral or corticosteroid may also be prescribed. In extreme conditions, ultraviolet light therapy or laser therapy might also be used on the affected areas. Immunosuppressants could be prescribed when other solutions have failed, as these drugs suppress the immune system.
What Are the Symptoms of Eczema?
Eczema spots can appear anywhere on the body but predominantly occur on the face, neck, hands, or legs. With children, patches can appear on the inner creases of their knees and elbows. Once the skin is scratched, dry spots and open sores with crust could develop and can become infected. Eczema is typically characterized by the following:
- Red, dry, or itchy skin
- Persistent breakouts
- Pus-filled blisters
- Dry, cracked skin
- Skin thickening
- Skin sensitivity due to scratching
- Darkening of the skin surrounding the eyes
- Small, raised bumps
- Rash or swollen skin that varies in color
